A Question of Taste

A Loyal Scotch Chix Fan recently wrote in asking why the Scotch Chix didn't include Glenlivet 12 and Glenfiddich 12 on their "5 Scotches to Get any Chick Started?" This Gentleman argued that since these two single malt whiskys are so toned down, they would be natural introductions to the world of scotch. While we appreciate his input and are always delighted to hear from our Loyal Scotch Chix Fans, it was evident to us that our correspondent needed a little Remedial Scotch Chix Training! We thought we would expand the lesson to all of you budding Scotch Gents.

Listen up, Gentlemen, we are only going to say this once: Women do not need to have anything toned down for them. In fact, by introducing your Lady to a watery non-descript scotch, you may destroy any chances of a relationship with the finest of liquids.

Women have complex palates. They eat a wide range of food; they've already established themselves in wine tasting; and, unlike men, they have enough sense to know that great taste does not belong in the same sentence with "lite beer" (and no, neither does "less filling").

Our correspondent was not alone in underestimating a woman's taste, however. According to a November 2007 article on allfoodscotland.com, the whisky industry is making similar silly assumptions about women's palates. They are designing pretty packaging, creating cocktails, inventing new liqueurs, and advertising that their single malt whisky is pink (by the way, it isn't - it's more of a copper color). What a colossal waste of money!

While we women like to make you Gentlemen think we are mysterious, the secret to a Lady's scotch palate is really quite simple. Start with a good tasting single malt whisky, one that is smooth, has a complex palate, and finishes gently. You may have to do a little research, but a Loyal Scotch Chix Fan should always be willing to sacrifice in the name of single malt science. 

If your lady has a sweet tooth, pick one of the sweeter scotches, such as Bruichladdich 12, Glenrothes 1991, Glenmorangie 10, or Highland Park 12. If she leans toward more savory tidbits, start with something less sweet such as Bunnahabhain 12 or Caol Ila 12. If you really want to capture her heart, splurge on a bottle of Glenmorangie 18 Margaux Finish, Highland Park 30, or Bruichladdich 20 "Flirtation." If she doesn't drink it, you can always claim the honor. 

Then trust your lady's palate - don't adulterate the finest of liquids. Present it to her neat, and let her make the assessment. If she is coming to scotch with pre-conceived notions, it may take a sip or two for her to wash them away, but be patient. She'll come around. After, all it is merely a question of taste.
