Grounded Flight

After letting several weeks pass since tasting the Glenmorangie flight at Chef Geoff's DC Scotch Chick thought it was high time to go back and finally check out the Balvenie flight. So this past weekend that is exactly what she set out to do.

However, DC Scotch Gent was not in the mood for Balvenie. Determined not to miss a weekend of "work" DC Scotch Chick fired off an email to CA Scotch Chick to notify her of a change in plans. Turns out CA Scotch Chick had just picked up a Balvenie sampler (12, 15, and 21) at Bevmo and would save it for the Chix next get together. DC Scotch Chick would still head to Chef Geoff's (hey---they have a decent single malt menu AND TVs for Notre Dame football) but would try a couple single malts that were new to her instead. The only two single malts left that she had not tried were the Cragganmore 12 and the Glenkinchie 10. One Highland and one Lowland. And boy were they different.

The DC Scotch Couple started with the Cragganmore and prepared themselves to smell a lot of fruit. The DC Scotch Couple did smell fruit, namely plums and prunes, but not an overabundance of it. The Cragganmore has a nice medium body with a touch of spice and vanilla on the palate. The finish is long and pleasant. Definitely not a "Wow" single malt and probably something DC Scotch Chick would not order again but it did the trick.

The Glenkinchie 10 must be an acquired taste. Sweet and nutty on the nose but very spicy and dry on the palate. It almost leaves your mouth raw---something the DC Scotch Couple attributes to it's youth. The DC Scotch Couple found it a bit harsh but to be fair they have not sampled many single malts from the Lowlands so a future comparison test may be warranted.

So overall not a stellar night for malt drinking. But it's always fun to try new malts and share our opinions with our Loyal Scotch Chix Fans.
