Convert of the Week: NY Scotch Bro
With little effort, the Chix have won over another scotch lover. This past weekend, on one of the east coast's typical scorching days, DC Scotch Gent's brother, NY Scotch Bro, left one sweaty city for another, braving a 5 hour bus ride from NYC down to the swamp known as DC. With the heat index well over 100, no one dared venture outside. The monuments would have to wait for another visit – which left indoor activities – in particular a little single malt sampling.
What the DC Scotch couple love about NY Scotch Bro is his laid-back air and his willingness to try anything. On a previous visit, he had mentioned that he just couldn't get into single malt whisky. So, they offered him some of the Woodford Reserve bourbon they keep on hand, indicating that its taste was very much like a single malt whisky. Not only did he enjoy it, but it piqued his curiosity.
Consequently, when the Scotch Chix website was launched, DC Scotch Chick encouraged him to check it out, and he in turn requested a whisky recommendation. DC Scotch Chick suggested Highland Park 12 since it is both a complex and gentle scotch. NY Scotch Bro went right out and purchased a bottle, and a budding Scotch Gent was born.
Since DC Scotch Chick was more intent on reinforcing the recent conversion than expanding NY Scotch Bro's palate, she laid in some Highland Park 12 for his visit. Unfortunately, DC Scotch Chick did not have any of her killer chocolate chip cookies to go with the Highland Park, but she did have some of her favorite dark chocolate in her stash of goodies. It was a perfect accompaniment to Highland Park 12. DC Scotch Chick also had out some fresh orange sections, and NY Scotch Bro did some pairing of his own. To DC Scotch Chix surprise, he preferred the citrus with the Highland Park 12 over the chocolate – an observation that warrants further investigation by the Chix.
The time passed quickly, filled with whisky, food, and much conversation. On Sunday evening, the DC Scotch couple put their new convert back on the bus to NY with the knowledge that the weekend was only the beginning of a long journey of single malt discovery.
